When it comes to delicious meat-free treats, these Non Meat Balls are definitely the superstars! This versatile batter made from lentils is not only perfect for the balls, but also for juicy burger patties. But the combination of these delicious lentil balls and perfectly cooked spaghetti is and remains my highlight.

These Ingredients make:

  • 250 g Spaghetti

Non Meatballs

  • 1/2 large white onion
  • 300 g cooked brown lentils pressed
  • 125 g Oat flakes
  • 50 g Walnuts
  • 3 TL Tomato paste
  • 1 EL Mustard
  • 1/2 TL Salt
  • 2 TL Smoked paprika
  • Oil for frying

Sauce

  • 1/2 large white onion
  • 2 Garlic cloves pressed
  • 500 g strained tomatoes
  • 1/2 TL Pepper
  • 1 Pinch Salt
  • 60 ml Pasta water

Preparation of the Non Meat Balls

  1. Cook the lentils or use already cooked lentils from the tin.
  2. Mix all the ingredients for the meatballs (onion, cooked lentils, rolled oats, walnuts, tomato puree, mustard, salt, smoked paprika) into a batter.
  3. Leave the mixture to stand for 5 minutes and then shape into 18 balls of 35g each.

Frying the non-meat balls

  1. Heat the oil in a pan.
  2. Fry the balls for 15 minutes until crispy, turning and tossing occasionally, until they are golden brown all over.
  3. Remove the balls from the pan and set aside.

Preparing the sauce, cooking pasta

  1. In the same pan in which the Non Meat Balls were fried, sauté the onion and garlic in the stock.
  2. Add the tomato purée, salt, pepper and pasta water.
  3. Add the prepared non-meat balls to the sauce together with the fresh basil and simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Cook the pasta in a pan of salted water.

Merging and serving

  1. Add the pasta to the sauce and balls and fold in.
  2. Divide the dish between plates and garnish with fresh basil or other toppings as desired.
